When we do
both the copyediting and the proofreading of a manuscript, we can usually
reduce the rate since we become very familiar with the manuscript.
Copyediting
$30 per hour or $4.00 per page (based on 250 words per page),
whichever is less.
Standard copyediting service includes reading the manuscript twice.
- Edit using standard copyediting and proofreading marks
- Provide basic style sheet
- Correct or query grammar, syntax, spelling, punctuation and
usage errors as appropriate
- Edit for consistency of style, spelling,
capitalization, abbreviations, lists, table of contents, index, figures,
etc. throughout
- Query apparent mistakes (for example, sexist language,
libel, permissions, and credit lines)
- Address issues of organization, sense, heading
structure and confusing language
Proofreading
$25 per hour for page proofs, otherwise standard copyediting charges.
Proofreading includes editing the page proofs to publishing
specifications.
- Check that book layout follows its design
- Mark bad line breaks and hyphenation errors
- Correct spelling and grammar errors
- Verify that previous corrections to manuscript have
been made
- Check pagination against Contents and other references
(Indexing is charged separately)
- Track author versus printer errors for billing purposes

highly technical material (generally non-fiction books or articles). Heavy

Savvy
Sometimes you just need proofreading. Other times you need someone who can understand the technicalities of your subject. |
